STAKE 4 -  NOVICE COCKER 2nd DECEMBER 2024 at Tregynon, Powys.

On behalf of Spaniel FT Secretary Paul Leeke.

The fourth and final Shropshire Gundog Society Spaniel Field Trial of the 2024 season was by kind invitation of the Shearer Family.  Our Steward of the Beat, Sam Shearer, directed the competitors across the Heath providing opportunity for all dogs.

Judges James Starkey and Clare Baker ran the day on one of the best trialling ground for spaniels.

Bracken, white grass and areas of rushes provided good challenge for the dogs with a plentiful supply of game.  Another cold day was expected but again proved warmer than forecast and although there was some rain, it passed quickly.  A full card of 16 dogs ran.  The trial was declared over and awards presented.

Thanks to the guns, Neil, Peter, Clive and Chris who shot over the dogs providing some challenging retrieves.

STAKE 3 - ANY VARIETY SPANIEL NOVICE 25th NOVEMBER 2024 at Hall Lane Shoot Higher Walton.

On behalf of our hard working Spaniel FT secretary Paul Leeke.

This was the first trial Shropshire Gundogs have held at the Hall Lane shoot and we thank the shoot owners and helpers for their welcome. Shane Hartley, the keeper, was steward of the beat and we started off in woodland with a good cover of light bramble, bracken and more mature rhododendron and bamboo.

The recent heavy storms meant the ground was very wet and boggy with swollen steams and steep banks to be negotiated by dogs and people. The dogs worked the ground thoroughly with judges Paul Dyson and Ryan Tomlinson giving them the time they needed to make contact with the birds.

A big thank-you to the guns, Neil, Chris, Peter and Steve who negotiated the tough conditions getting birds down so that we could complete the trial with 4 dogs in contention and a run- off between the top two dogs for first place.

As always thanks to the helpers Julie, Grace and Pauline for stewarding and to our game carrier.  Sadly, there was no cake as our chief cake maker was at home surrounded by a flooded river Severn.

STAKE 2 - OPEN QUALIFYING STAKE SPANIEL (Cocker) 18 NOVEMBER 2024 at Tregynon, Powys.

The trial was by kind invitation of the Shearer Family and the Steward of the Beat, Sam Shearer. Judges Ben Randall and Richard Bunyan ran the day on one of the best trialling grounds for spaniels. The bracken has died back and white grass areas provided plenty of shelter for pheasants, that were flighty, proving a worthy challenge for an Open stake. Game was plentiful but with little wind it was a great test for the dogs and handlers alike. A cold day was expected but proved warmer than forecast and we were lucky that rain held off until the end of the trial. 15 dogs were seen and judged, the trial drew to a close and was declared over.

Thanks to the guns, Neil, Tom, Clive and Chris who shot well over the dogs.

STAKE 1 - A.V. OPEN QUALIFYING STAKE SPANIEL (Ex Cocker) OCTOBER 2024 at Buildwas Park.

After a light drizzle to start the day then it cleared up with sunny intervals.

The trial was by kind invitation of the Perkins Family and the day was run by the Keeper Tom, who put on a great show of pheasants throughout the trial. The guns James, Mark, Lewis and Hamish did a good job in the woodland with lots of leaves still on the trees. The bramble cover was testing but the dogs all faced it very well and only 4 dogs were lost in the first round. After round two a 5 dog run off for the places was declared by judges Dave Rayner and Chris Thurston Woolnough. The judges commented on the good dog work and narrow margin between the top dogs.

Thanks go to the helpers, Peter, Joe, Jane and Grace; without willing helpers we couldn’t run our trials.

Mrs Perkins, the landowner, kindly presented the prizes and chatted to all those present.

Spaniel Test Results 2024

Any Variety Spaniel Working Test Sunday 15th September 2024 - Hollies Coppice, Haughmond, Shrewsbury.

It was a wet day with persistent showers; but ideal for the dogs working in the light bramble and bracken in the woodland area. A big thanks to Sundorne Castle estate for the use of the ground and the woodsman Martyn Zielinski for preparing the tracks and car park area , also thank you to all the club members and helpers, Lee, Adam, Alfie, Kaye, Tina and Claire who gave up their time to throw dummies, fire shots and steward and who all stayed positive despite being soaked on several occasions.  Thank goodness Jayne CB had brought her lovely cakes to keep us going.  Paul Leeke and the others who put the hours in behind the scenes to organise the test, also thanks must go to our judges Ian Bogacki and Neil Davies who gave competitors positive feedback and encouragement and of course our Sponsors, Skinners and Sporting Saint for all their support. The raffle masterminded by Jane Holmes raised £85 for our charity Midlands Air Ambulance.
