STAKE 4 - NOVICE COCKER 24th November at Tregynon, Powys.

The fourth and final Shropshire Gundog Society Spaniel Field Trial of the 2025 season was by kind invitation of the Shearer Family. Our Steward of the Beat, Sam Shearer, directed the competitors across the Heath and high up onto the bank providing opportunity for all dogs.

Our first Spaniel trial under the four judge system proved successful with judges Gareth Davies, Claire Starkey, Jon Rees and Bill Parkinson keeping the trial moving smoothly.

Bracken, white grass and areas of rushes provided a challenge for the dogs on a cold day, a good supply of game and the dogs proved their hunting ability to catch up with the birds. A full card of 16 dogs ran.

Thanks to the guns, Neil, Clare, Clive and Chris who shot well over the dogs providing some challenging retrieves.

Grace was attending her last trial as a SGS official helper and Paul presented her with a bottle of red wine to mark her retirement. Our raffle raised in the hands of Jane Holmes raised an excellent £73 for Midland Air Ambulance.

STAKE 3 - ANY VARIETY SPANIEL NOVICE 10th NOVEMBER 2025 at Lakeside Shoot, Tregynon Powys.

The trial was held on the heath with its spectacular views, by permission of James and Wendy Shearer. We were very well looked after by the latest of the Shearer boys “Young Charlie” who at just 18 keep the line to the best areas of bracken covered banks giving each dog the same chances to show off their merits.

We had a card of 14 dogs, 13 ESS and a Clumber Spaniel. Judges Trevis Crothers A Panel and Andy Fletcher NP gave them the time they needed to make contact with the abundance of partridge and pheasant on the ground.

There was a very light breeze and a couple of blustery showers which the guns, Neil, Chris, Matt and John negotiated, on the hillside, getting birds down for the dogs in good order so that we could complete the trial with 3 dogs standing.

STAKE 2 - OPEN COCKER QUALIFYING STAKE, 29th October 2025, at Apley Park, Shropshire

The trial was by kind invitation of our Patron, Lord Hamilton of Dalzell at Apley Estate. Judges were both A panel, Jeremy Organ and Alex Badger, testing all the dogs over varied ground. 15 dogs were seen and judged, the trial drew to a close and was declared over with 4 places and 6 COMs testifying the quality of the dogs competing.
